Forgetting under difficult conditions: Item-method directed forgetting under perceptual processing constraints

چکیده
Intentional forgetting of unwanted items is effortful, yet directed seems to improve when a secondary task performed. According the cognitive load hypothesis forgetting, allocating attentional resources another improves by restricting encoding to-be-forgotten (TBF) items. Alternatively, it might be that anything makes studying more difficult will encourage greater effort perform well and therefore lead improved intentional forgetting. To assess these proposals we imposed data-processing limitations on study words in an item-method paradigm. Across six experiments, perceptual quality was manipulated varying: (1) duration word presentation (Experiments 1–4); (2) contrast displayed against its visual background (Experiment 5); or (3) amount noise which presented 6). In Experiments 4–6, lexical decision corroborated difficulty processing. Despite evidence relatively low high noise, particular, create challenging conditions, found no impacts magnitude effect. This work suggests data have discernible effect corroborate only resource

Directed forgetting of complex pictures in an item method paradigm.
An item-cued directed forgetting paradigm was used to investigate the ability to control episodic memory and selectively encode complex coloured pictures. A series of photographs was presented to 21 participants who were instructed to either remember or forget each picture after it was presented. Memory performance was later tested with a recognition task where all presented items had to be ret...
متن کاملIntentional forgetting reduces the semantic processing of to-be-forgotten items: an ERP study of item-method directed forgetting.
In two ERP experiments, we examined whether active inhibition is involved in intentional forgetting. Both experiments consisted of a nondirected-forgetting (nDF) and a directed-forgetting (DF) block. Participants were sequentially presented with a prime, an R/F (remember/forget) cue, and a target. Participants made lexical decisions to both the primes and targets (Experiment 1) or only to the t...
متن کاملShort-Term Forgetting of Order Under Conditions of Reduced Interference
T hree experiments examined the shor t-term retention of order in a modi® ed Brown±Peterson task. Our intent was to examine the loss of order memory, unconfounded by item memory, under conditions in which interference from prior trials is kept low. In previous work on the shor t-term forgetting of order, experimenters have tended to repeat the same items across trials or to draw from a restrict...
متن کاملAn event-related potential investigation of the processing of Remember/Forget cues and item encoding in item-method directed forgetting.
This study examined the electrophysiological correlates of the processing of the Remember/Forget cues and the successful encoding of study items in item-method directed forgetting. Subjects engaged in an old/new recognition test and an item-method directed forgetting task. Event-related potentials (ERPs) time-locked to study items and Remember/Forget cues were compared according to the subseque...
متن کاملSleep can eliminate list-method directed forgetting.
Recent work suggests a link between sleep and memory consolidation, indicating that sleep in comparison to wakefulness stabilizes memories. However, relatively little is known about how sleep affects forgetting. Here we examined whether sleep influences directed forgetting, the finding that people can intentionally forget obsolete memories when cued to do so. We applied the list-method directed...
